A UK Standard Visitor visa costs £135 for six months and is applied for entirely online, with one appointment in Dubai or Abu Dhabi to give biometrics. For UAE residents frustrated by Schengen appointment queues, there is one striking difference: UK appointments are available within days rather than weeks. This guide covers who needs a visa, what it costs, and the one test the whole application turns on.

Checked on 13 September 2026 against the Home Office immigration and nationality fees table effective 8 April 2026. Sources at the end. Fees are set in sterling and charged in dirhams at the exchange rate on the day.

Visa or ETA: which applies to you

The UK is not in the Schengen Area and runs its own system. There are two documents, and your passport decides which one you need.

PassportWhat you needCost
IndiaStandard Visitor visa£135
PakistanStandard Visitor visa£135
PhilippinesStandard Visitor visa£135
Egypt, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, NigeriaStandard Visitor visa£135
United Arab EmiratesElectronic Travel Authorisation£20

The ETA is for nationalities that do not need a visa. If your passport requires a visitor visa, you do not apply for an ETA and it does not replace anything. Ignore any site offering to process an ETA for an Indian or Pakistani passport.

Your UAE residence does not change which document you need. It lets you apply here rather than in your country of citizenship.

What it costs

Home Office fees rose on 8 April 2026. These are the current amounts.

ApplicationValidityFee
Standard VisitorUp to 6 months£135
Long-term visitor2 years£506
Long-term visitor5 years£903
Long-term visitor10 years£1,128
Academic or private medical visitUp to 11 or 12 months£234
Priority serviceAdd-on+£500
Super priority serviceAdd-on+£1,000

Visitors pay no Immigration Health Surcharge. That charge applies to visas longer than six months, such as work and study routes, and does not touch the visitor route at any validity.

On top of the Home Office fee, the visa application centre charges its own service fee in dirhams, and any courier, scanning or premium lounge service you choose is extra. Those are commercial charges, not government ones.

Be careful which fee you are quoted. Researching this guide in September 2026, we found sites published this year listing the six-month fee as £115, £127 and £135 — three different figures for the same visa. One quoted the current £135 alongside long-term fees that were superseded two years ago. Check the Home Office fee calculator at visa-fees.homeoffice.gov.uk on the day you apply, and treat any figure above the sterling equivalent as a third-party charge rather than the government fee.

Is a long-term visa worth it?

The long-term visitor visa is the same visa with a longer validity window. Every individual stay is still capped at six months. You are buying the right to make repeat trips without reapplying, not a longer stay.

The arithmetic is simple. At £135 a time, a two-year visa at £506 pays for itself at about four visits, and a ten-year visa at £1,128 at about nine.

Two things to weigh beyond cost. The visa is tied to the passport it is issued in, so a passport expiring in three years caps the value of a ten-year visa. And a travel pattern that looks like living in the UK rather than visiting it will be refused, however long your visa runs.

Where a shorter validity is granted than the one you applied and paid for, there is no refund.

The appointment difference

This is the part worth knowing if you have spent a summer hunting Schengen slots.

VFS Global’s Regional Head for the UAE has said publicly that the UK will always have an appointment available within five working days, describing it as a stipulation. That is a different world from Schengen appointments in peak season, where slots for popular countries vanish within minutes of release.

It does not make the UK easier to be approved for. The assessment is separate from the appointment, and the genuine visitor test below is a real hurdle. But the logistics are far more predictable, and for a trip with fixed dates that matters.

How to apply

  1. Apply online on gov.uk. There is no paper form and no interview for most visitor applicants.
  2. Pay the fee, in dirhams at the applicable exchange rate.
  3. Book a biometrics appointment at the visa application centre and attend in person for fingerprints and a photograph.
  4. Upload your documents, or have them scanned at the centre. Note the file size limits when uploading.
  5. Submit your passport as instructed, and collect it or have it couriered back.

The published service standard for a visitor decision is around three weeks, though it stretches in busy seasons. Priority and super priority buy queue position, not a different decision, and a case needing further checks drops out of the fast lane anyway.

The genuine visitor test

Everything in a UK visitor application turns on one question: are you a genuine visitor who will leave at the end of the stay?

A caseworker is looking for a trip that makes sense for someone in your circumstances, and for reasons you will return to the UAE. In practice:

  • Your finances should fit the trip. The UK does not publish a minimum balance. What matters is that your money plausibly covers the visit alongside your normal commitments, and that it has been there long enough to be credibly yours.
  • Your ties should be visible. Employment, residence visa validity, family in the UAE, a tenancy or property.
  • Your travel history helps. Previous compliant visits to the UK, Schengen, the US or Australia all count in your favour.
  • Your purpose must be permitted. Visitors cannot work, sell goods or services, or study long term.

Repeat back-to-back visits are a specific risk. Someone spending most of the year in the UK on visitor visas will eventually be refused entry, because the pattern shows residence rather than visiting.

Documents

The UK asks for less than a Schengen consulate does, but what you submit carries more weight because there is no checklist protecting you.

  • Passport, and previous passports showing travel history
  • UAE residence visa and Emirates ID
  • Bank statements, usually six months
  • Employer letter confirming your role, salary and approved leave, or trade licence and company documents if you are self-employed
  • Salary certificate or payslips
  • Travel plan, flight and accommodation details
  • An invitation letter and your host’s details, if you are staying with family or friends
  • Evidence of ties to the UAE

Our NOC letter templates and bank statement guide both apply here, with one difference: address the employer letter to the UK Visas and Immigration caseworker rather than a named consulate.

Mistakes that cause refusals

  • A trip that does not fit your finances. A three-week tour funded by a balance that barely covers it invites doubt.
  • A large deposit shortly before applying. Caseworkers look at patterns.
  • Applying for an ETA when you need a visa. Check your passport first.
  • Assuming a long-term visa allows longer stays. Each visit is still capped at six months.
  • Back-to-back visits that amount to living in the UK.
  • Paying an old fee. The amount changed on 8 April 2026.
  • Buying non-refundable flights before a decision.

Questions people ask

How much is a UK visitor visa from Dubai?

£135 for up to six months, from 8 April 2026. Long-term visas are £506 for two years, £903 for five and £1,128 for ten. The visa application centre charges its own service fee on top, in dirhams.

Do Indians in the UAE need a UK visa?

Yes. Indian passport holders need a Standard Visitor visa regardless of UAE residence. The ETA is for visa-exempt nationalities only.

How long does a UK visitor visa take from the UAE?

Around three weeks as a service standard, longer in peak seasons. Priority and super priority services are available at extra cost where your centre offers them.

How much bank balance do I need?

The UK publishes no minimum. Caseworkers assess whether your funds credibly cover the trip alongside your normal commitments, and whether the money has been in place long enough to be plausibly yours.

Can I stay six months every year on a 10-year visa?

Each visit is capped at six months, but a pattern that looks like living in the UK will lead to refusal at the border. The visa is for visiting.

Do visitors pay the health surcharge?

No. The Immigration Health Surcharge does not apply to the visitor route at any validity.
