Pakistani passport holders in the UAE need a Schengen visa, and unlike Indian nationals they are not covered by any EU fast-track scheme for long visas. There is also a requirement that catches Pakistani travellers specifically: for some journeys you need a visa simply to change planes in Europe, even without leaving the airport. This guide covers both, and how to build towards a multiple-entry visa under the rules that do apply to you.

Do you need a Schengen visa?
Yes. Pakistani passport holders need a short-stay Schengen visa, type C, whatever their UAE residence status. Living here for fifteen years changes nothing about that. What it does change is where you apply: you can apply at a Schengen consulate in the UAE rather than travelling to Islamabad, Lahore or Karachi.

Why there is no Pakistan cascade
The EU has agreed national “cascade” schemes with a small number of countries, giving their nationals faster access to long multiple-entry visas. As of September 2026, those schemes cover India, Türkiye and Indonesia. Pakistan is not among them.
You will see commentary suggesting Pakistan may be added, alongside the Philippines and Sri Lanka, given application volumes. That is speculation. Nothing has been adopted, and you should not plan an application around a scheme that does not exist.
What applies to you is the standard Visa Code, which has its own ladder. It is slower, but it goes to the same place: an applicant who builds a record of obtaining and lawfully using visas becomes eligible for multiple-entry visas of increasing validity, up to five years, provided their reliability is established and the consulate has no doubt they will leave before the visa expires.
Working through the standard ladder typically takes several years of regular, compliant travel. That is the honest timeline.
The airport transit visa
This is the Pakistan-specific rule most UAE residents have never heard of, and it can stop you boarding.
Normally, changing planes in a Schengen airport without passing through immigration requires no visa. For nationals of a short list of countries, it does. That list is in the Visa Code, and Pakistan is on it. The document is called an airport transit visa, or ATV, and it permits you to be in the international transit area — not to enter the country.
When you probably do not need one
There are exemptions, and most people transiting are covered by them. Broadly, you are exempt if you already hold a valid visa or residence permit from a Schengen state, or from certain other countries including the United States and Canada.
So the common case is fine. If you are flying Dubai to Toronto via Frankfurt, you are holding a Canadian visa, and that normally exempts you.
A UAE residence permit does not exempt you. The exemptions are based on visas and residence permits from Schengen states and a specified group of other countries. The UAE is not among them. If your route has you transiting a Schengen airport and you do not hold one of the qualifying documents, check whether you need an ATV before you book.
What the numbers say
Across every Schengen consulate in the UAE in 2025, only 37 airport transit visa applications were filed. Twelve were issued and eighteen were not.
That is a very small number, and it tells you two things. Most UAE residents transiting Europe are exempt, usually because they hold a visa for their destination country. And the requirement is narrow enough that few people encounter it — which is precisely why nobody warns you about it, and why being caught by it at check-in is so costly.
Getting a multiple-entry visa
Without a national cascade, the burden of showing you deserve a long visa sits more heavily on your file. Four things matter.
Ask for it
The application form has a field for the number of entries you are requesting. Select multiple entry. Consulates do not routinely grant what nobody asked for.
Show the record
Copies of previous Schengen visas, entry and exit stamps, and older passports where your history sits. Under the Entry/Exit System, now fully operational since April 2026, your compliance is recorded digitally at the border. A clean record is verifiable; so is an overstay, and an overstay means a previous visa was not “lawfully used”.
Give a reason
A sentence in your cover letter: you travel to Europe once or twice a year for work or family, you have held and complied with previous Schengen visas, and you are requesting multiple entry on that basis.
Check your passport validity
A consulate cannot issue a visa beyond your passport’s expiry. If your passport has two years left, that caps your visa. Renewing first is often the cheapest way to a longer visa.
What UAE consulates actually issue
The European Commission publishes what each consulate did. Of visas issued in the UAE in 2025, 55.5% were multiple-entry, and consulates differ sharply.

These are outcomes across all applicants, not a forecast for your file, and they are published by consulate rather than by nationality — so there is no figure specific to Pakistani applicants. Documents for Pakistani applicants in the UAE
Your file is a UAE file. Guides written for applicants in Pakistan ask for documents that are not relevant to you.
- Your financial evidence is your UAE evidence — salary certificate, UAE bank statements, employer letter. Not Pakistani tax records.
- Your UAE residence visa must be valid, normally with months left beyond your return date. Renew before applying if it is close to expiry.
- Emirates ID goes in the file with your passport.
- Ties in Pakistan can support the picture but do not replace UAE ties. The question the consulate is answering is whether you will return to the UAE.
- Family sponsorship is common and entirely acceptable — it just has to be documented properly, with the sponsor’s letter, financial documents, identity papers and proof of relationship. See our checklist by applicant type.
One other rule that affects your passport
Outside Schengen, Pakistan appears on another list worth knowing about. Georgia’s April 2025 rule requires citizens of 17 countries, Pakistan among them, to hold a UAE residence permit that is multiple-entry and has at least one year of validity remaining in order to enter without a Georgian visa. Indian and Filipino passport holders are not subject to it.

Questions people ask
Can Pakistanis get a 5-year Schengen visa?
Not through a national cascade, because no such scheme exists for Pakistan. The standard Visa Code route to multiple-entry visas of up to five years is open to you, but it is built on a record of previous compliant travel and typically takes several years.
Do Pakistani passport holders need a visa to transit a European airport?
Pakistan is on the Visa Code’s airport transit visa list, so in principle yes. Most travellers are exempt, usually because they hold a visa or residence permit for a Schengen state or for certain other countries including the US and Canada. A UAE residence permit does not exempt you. Check your specific route before booking.
Does my UAE residence help my Schengen application?
It lets you apply here rather than in Pakistan, and a stable job, long residence and a residence visa with time left on it all support the case that you will return. It does not exempt you from needing a visa.
Do I need Pakistani bank statements or tax documents?
Generally no. You are applying as a UAE resident, so your UAE salary certificate, bank statements and employer letter are the relevant evidence.
Do Pakistani nationals need ETIAS?
No. ETIAS is for visa-exempt nationalities. Pakistani passport holders need a Schengen visa.
Will Pakistan be added to the cascade scheme?
Nothing has been adopted. Commentary has suggested Pakistan, the Philippines and Sri Lanka as possible future additions, but that is speculation and no timetable exists.
